Blazers Announce Operational Changes

by Eric Rodgers

The Oklahoma City Blazers announced today that current head coach Gary Gill will be transitioning from his duties as head coach, and promoting assistant coach Ty Smith to take over the reigns behind the bench. Gill will remain with the team in a General Manager role, and continue as owner of the Blazers.

Transitioning to a GM role, Gill will be able to handle the behind-the-scenes duties for the team, while Smith will handle the day-to-day coaching of the team.

Since taking over the Blazers in 2017, Gill has led the Blazers to two straight Thorne Cup Finals appearances.

Ty Smith joined the team prior to the 2018-19 season, helping lead the team to the Thorne Cup Finals. Prior to joining OKC, Smith's coaching career began in 2010, where he served as the head coach of the Tulsa Union High School team. From there, Smith spent time as an assistant coach with the Cheyenne Stampede, Tulsa Jr. Oilers, and Springfield Express. Smith's first WSHL head coaching position came with the Butte Cobras from 2015 thru 2017, before joining West Sound in 2017.

The Blazers have also re-named current Director of Communications Eric Rodgers as Director of Communications and Game-Day Operations.
