Blazers Even Up Weekend With 2-1 Win

by Eric Rodgers

Saturday night, the Oklahoma City Blazers and El Paso Rhinos met for the second game of their three-game series. After picking up the win the previous night, Nils Velm started in goal for the Rhinos, against Bobby Cloutier of the Blazers.

Things started out much as they do between these two teams, as they took their time in feeling out the pace of the game. Midway through the period, it was the Rhinos scoring first to go up 1-0. A few minutes later, Hunter Dougherty picked up his first goal of the season, sneaking a point shot off a player and in to tie things up, and send the game to the intermission tied 1-1.

The 2nd period continued the trend as both teams jockeyed for momentum against the other. Unlike Friday's game, the luck went the way of OKC on the power play, as a save by Velm turned into a rebound and an empty net for Jordan Sgro as he put the Blazers up 2-0.

The rest of the game was a goaltender's battle as both Velm and Cloutier made big stops to keep the game at a 2-1 score. In the final minute, El Paso pulled Velm for the extra attacker and OKC staved off the attack to pick up the 2-1 win and even up the weekend at a game apiece.

Cloutier picked up the win in net, making 42 saves on 43 shots.

The teams close out the weekend series on Sunday with a 2:15p start at Arctic Edge!
