Blazers Fall To Utah, 5-2

by Eric Rodgers

The Oklahoma City Blazers welcomed the Utah Outliers to the Arctic Edge Ice Arena Friday night, for the first of a three game set - their only meetings of this season, after the Blazers traveled to Utah last season. After getting swept last weekend, the Blazers looked to rebound at home, while the Outliers were coming off of two big Northwest Division wins against the Seattle Totems.

Danick Francoeur took the net for OKC, against Oscar Wahlgren of the Outliers. Utah took the initial lead as Miroslav Hradeky ripped a shot past Francoeur on the rush, scoring 2:17 into the game. OKC answered back a few minutes later as Brigham Neuhold took the puck behind the net of Wahlgren, and found Matej Hajek in front for the goal and the 1-1 tie.

As time ticked down in the 1st period, Mikey Power picked up a pass at the side of the slot, and with time and space, he faked his initial shot to get Wahlgren out of position, and made the second one count, putting OKC up 2-1 to close out the 1st.

Things held at the 2-1 Blazers lead for much of the second, before Andrei Shmakov found the back of the net to tie things back up at 2-2, with just under three minutes left in the frame. Utah continued the momentum into the 3rd period, as Xavier Erickson put the Outliers back into the lead just 2:02 into the final period.

Taking advantage of an ill-timed penalty, Tristan Slot extended the Outliers lead to a 4-2 score. A minute later, a broken play in front of Francoeur forced him out of position, and the puck found itself sitting in the blue paint for an easy tap-in by Erickson, sealing the 5-2 win by the Outliers.
