Blazers Take Down Snipers, 7-3
Friday night, the Oklahoma City Blazers and the Dallas Snipers met for the first time in the 2018-19 season at Arctic Edge to kick off their weekend series. Xavier Garneau made the start in net for OKC, against Alexander Aleshkin for the Snipers.
Dallas jumped out to an early lead, catching Garneau off-guard as Karsten Portell put the Snipers up by a 1-0 lead just 1:00 into the contest. The Blazers top line of Henrik Overvall, Vitali Mikhailov, and Stephane Doering didn't let that last long as Mikhailov tied things up and started a big night for the three.
With 3:01 left in the 1st period, Overvall gave the Blazers the 2-1 lead, sending the game to the first intermission.
Both goaltenders came up big in the 2nd period, making quality stops as the Snipers picked up a couple of breakaway chances, and the Blazers had sustained pressure in the Dallas zone. Overvall and Nathan Inniss were able to find the back of the net in the 2nd, putting OKC up 4-1 after 40 minutes.
Doering kicked off the 3rd period to put the Blazers up 5-1, which was quickly matched by Dallas' Eric Eaton to make it a 5-2 game. As the minutes ticked down, Mikhailov and Lukas Lundgren picked up goals to make it a 7-2 score, but the Snipers kept pushing as Todd Thompson made it a 7-3 game with 12.5 seconds remaining to close out the game.
Garneau improved to 9-2-0 on the season as he made 15 saves in the win.
OKC and Dallas face off in the second of three games on the weekend on Saturday, with the game time set for 7:00p at Arctic Edge, and Military Appreciation Weekend continues! Following the game, the specialty jerseys will be auctioned off of the player's backs!
