Thorne Cup Finals Wrap-Up, Day Two

by Eric Rodgers

The Oklahoma City Blazers opened up their Thorne Cup Finals round-robin games with a 4-2 loss to the number-one seed Ogden Mustangs on Tuesday night, and had a quick turnaround as they opened up the second day's slate of action against the Bellingham Blazers.

With Xavier Garneau in net, the Blazers found themselves in a 2-0 hole after the first period, giving up a rare power play goal in the process as well. But after the first intermission, OKC showed off their offensive prowess, scoring three goals in the first 2:06 of the 2nd period to take the lead, with Vitali Mikhailov picking up a pair of goals, and Henrik Overvall adding the third. Midway through the period, Tobias Thorner scored the fourth unanswered goal for OKC, making it a 4-2 lead. Bellingham quickly grabbed one back to make it 4-3, but Jordan Sgro ended the period with the fifth OKC goal to make it 5-3 heading into the 3rd.

With the next goal being a big one for either team, it went the way of OKC as Harri Koll scored his third goal in two games, putting OKC up by the 6-3 score. One more attempt by Bellingham brought them back within two, but OKC held on to pick up the win over Bellingham and improve to 1-1 in the Round Robin series.

Later in the day, El Paso picked up the win over Long Beach and Ogden picked up the win over Edson, as both winners improved to 2-0 on the week.
