Friday night, the Oklahoma City Blazers returned to Blazers Ice Centre as they took on the South Division-leading Atlanta Capitals for the first time this season. With four points separating the two teams in the standings, the Blazers looked to begin closing the gap.
Fresh off his Goalie of the Month award, the Blazers went with Jacob Ahl in net, while Atlanta went with undefeated starter Greg Smith.
Atlanta kicked off the scoring midway through the 1st period as Dylan Slater and Eddie Slack connected in front of the net of Ahl to put the Capitals up by a 1-0 score. Minutes later, the Capitals were able to get a shorthanded rush up ice during a Blazers power play, with Gunnar Moore picking the low corner glove-side on Ahl, and putting Atlanta on top by a 2-0 lead.
OKC would not go quietly into the locker room for the first intermission however, as newcomer Patrick Wyers picked up his first goal of the season to cut the lead in half, and send us to the intermission with a 2-1 score in favor of Atlanta.
Wyers continued to impress in his debut for the Blazers, as he continued the momentum from period number one, scoring the first goal of the 2nd period as well, tying things up for OKC. The pair of goals rocketed OKC on the scoreboard as Michael Onda and Artem Korolev added another set of goals, and putting the Blazers up by a 4-2 lead after the 2nd.
Capping off the night, Patrick Wyers picked up the puck on a rush with Noah Henslee, putting it past Smith, and picking up the hat trick for OKC in his debut. OKC held strong the remainder of the 3rd, and the Blazers picked up the 5-2 win over Atlanta.
Jacob Ahl picked up the win in net to improve to 5-0-0 on the season, while Smith took his first loss of the season, falling to 8-1-0 so far this season.
Both teams return to the Blazers Ice Centre on Saturday night for game two of the three-game weekend series!
