Friday night, the Oklahoma City Blazers returned to the road as they visited College Station, Texas for the first time this season, looking ahead to a three-game weekend set against the Texas RoadRunners. In the last meeting between the two teams, Jacob Ahl made his NA3HL debut and completely shutout the RoadRunners over a two-game weekend. With Ahl back in net, he and the Blazers looked to gain some points back in the standings against Max Hetman in net for Texas.
OKC kicked off the scoring in the first period as Colton Sebastian set up in front of the net, and was able to redirect a pass from defenseman Artem Shura into the net, putting OKC up by a 1-0 score. As the period continued, the Blazers top line of Artem Korolev, Noah Henslee, and Tucker Lien took control of the rest of the game. Korolev put OKC up by a 2-0 score in the closing minutes of the 1st, and the momentum carried over into the middle frame.
Within 43 seconds of the 2nd period, both Korolev and Henslee connected with a goal to give the Blazers a quick 4-0 lead. The RoadRunners held off OKC for the next fifteen minutes, but it was Henslee once again finding the back of the net, and putting the Blazers up 5-0 as the teams hit the locker room for the second intermission.
The RoadRunners found their way onto the scoreboard in the 3rd period, as Tim Marsico was able to solve Jacob Ahl in net, scoring a pair of goals to cut the OKC lead down to a 5-2 score, and ending Ahl’s nearly 164 minutes of shutout hockey against the RoadRunners this season.
Looking to close things out, Henslee picked up the hat trick in the latter half of the 3rd, scoring his ninth of the season, and cementing the 6-2 win for the Blazers over the RoadRunners.
Ahl made 39 saves on 41 Texas shots in the win, as he improved to 6-0-1 on the season. Hetman turned aside 46 OKC shots, falling to an 0-2-1 record.
Both teams return to the ice at 6:15p Central time on Saturday for game two of the weekend series! The Blazers will be hosting a watch party at Slap Shots Beers & Bites, located in Arctic Edge, to watch the Blazers and RoadRunners faceoff!
